Is It Possible to Wear Invisalign With Crown?
Is it possible to wear braces if you have a crown or a dental bridge?
Perhaps you need to get your teeth realigned and you are thinking of getting braces. The problem is that you are currently wearing crowns or dental bridges. Will a crown or dental bridge prevent you from getting braces?
If you are currently wearing dental crowns or bridges and you are thinking of getting conventional braces, it is highly likely that you and your dentist will encounter a few roadblocks.
To put it succinctly, it is easier for dentists to install conventional braces on natural teeth compared to teeth that have been restored using bridges, crowns, fillings, and implants.
If you push through with getting conventional braces, one of the key challenges you and your dentist will have to face is limited tooth movement. This is particularly true if you are using bridges or dental implants. If you are currently using implants, these cannot be moved. As for dental bridges, your progress can be sluggish because your dentist has to avoid damaging these.
If you are wearing crowns on your front teeth, it is also possible that these can get damaged or displaced while you are wearing your braces or during the installation of the metal brackets. Should these happen, you will have to wait until your braces are removed before you can have your crowns replaced.
If your crowns are loose during the installation of conventional braces, your dentist may ask you to remove these and use temporary crowns instead. You can only use permanent crowns once the braces have been removed.
During your initial consultation with your dentist, he or she will discuss these and other possible roadblocks if you choose to wear conventional braces. He or she may also propose possible solutions and alternatives, including Invisalign.
However, you should be aware that Invisalign is not for everyone. In order to be deemed to be an ideal candidate for Invisalign, you should have teeth which are rooted soundly, your crowns should be attached and sealed firmly to your teeth, and the misalignment or spacing problem of your teeth should only be moderate.
The advantage of wearing Invisalign with crown is that there is no need to attach brackets to your teeth. This prevents the problem of the crown getting loose or detached from your teeth. Your dentist may also install a clear attachment to your teeth which will serve as protection for the crown.
