Can you prevent gingivitis? Good news – gingivitis is nearly 100 percent preventable!
Gingivitis is usually caused when plaque and bacteria accumulate on the gums. This is generally due to lack of oral hygiene. If you have gingivitis, you’ll notice that your gums are red and puffy. Also, your gums will bleed after brushing or flossing.
It is almost entirely within our patients’ power to prevent gingivitis by following proper oral hygiene habits. Make sure to brush after each meal and floss daily. Try to never miss an annual checkup with your Laurich dentist. Dr. Matt Laurich and Dr. Dennis Laurich will be able to detect gingivitis early.
If left untreated, gingivitis will eventually progress to periodontitis, a breakdown of the tissue and bone that support the teeth. You are more likely to have gum disease if you are a smoker, pregnant or menopausal, have heart disease, diabetes, epilepsy or HIV.
